Chicago White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Agreement.

In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The contract grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16M for the next season and $17M for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for winning the league MVP award.
  • Half a million dollars for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 in February, joins a emerging lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite fanning often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first, he has since transitioned to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that drove in teammates for a come-from-behind one-run win. The next night in the final against the Team USA, he hit a tying shot in the second inning, helping Japan's subsequent championship win.

The lefty slugger is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on the coming Monday.
