California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, not a single part of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This significant achievement comes on the heels of difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its enormous farming industry.
A Map Indicates An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program illustrated that all of California is without dry or drought conditions. This shift resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their typical levels.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a weather expert.
After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons
The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in significant overflow, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, regions like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those final dry conditions.
A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge
However, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Current readings of the high-elevation snow show it at approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which accounts for about a third of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the coming year.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” said a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this precious water balance during the rest of the year.
