Arne Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Retains The Club's Backing Following PSV Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for questions to be raised about his future after another heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds suffered their 9th loss in twelve matches, marking the club's worst run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a difficult night at Anfield.
“I feel secure, I'm fine, I've received plenty of support from the top,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to change things and get a victory obviously but when you're in a managerial role and underperforming then it's expected that doubts arise.”
He added, “I am OK with my position. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a tough spot but it's crucial that we changed our fortunes.”
Talks with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to expand on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach explained:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “Through standard exchanges I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them since this game yet so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over known failings from his squad in their Champions League defeat, namely wasted chances and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the solutions. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to all,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't need to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It's tough because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Reds side experiencing a spell of this nature with performances so bad.”
Jones finished, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as it is gone, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to get this team back to where it needs to be, prove again what Liverpool stands for and the reason it's called the best team in the planet.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
